YGG Play was a former publishing division of Yield Guild Games (YGG), created in 2025 to launch and promote smaller Web3 games in the Casual Degen category. The model primarily targeted crypto-native users who trade tokens and interact with DeFi and NFTs but are not necessarily traditional gamers. YGG Play combined publishing services, user acquisition, quests, token launches, and proprietary gaming projects, including LOL Land. Despite revenue growth and an expanding game catalog, YGG decided to shut down the division in the summer of 2026, meaning the project is now more accurately viewed as a completed experiment in crypto-native game publishing.

1. YGG Play and the Casual Degen Gaming Concept

YGG Play emerged as an extension of Yield Guild Games, a Web3 community originally built around gaming guilds, NFT assets, and the play-to-earn economy. The publishing division was officially introduced in May 2025 alongside the launch of LOL Land. Instead of financing large blockchain games with multi-year development cycles, the team focused on simpler gaming products that could be developed and launched more quickly.

YGG used the term Casual Degen to describe this category. It referred to short browser-based or on-chain games with accessible gameplay loops, social elements, rewards, and mechanics designed for cryptocurrency users. The target audience included not only active gamers but also users already familiar with NFTs, memecoins, exchanges, on-chain applications, and other parts of the crypto economy.

The main test of this concept was LOL Land, a browser-based board game launched in May 2025 on Abstract, a blockchain associated with the Igloo Inc. and Pudgy Penguins ecosystem. Before launch, the game attracted more than 100,000 pre-registrations. It combined a free-to-play mode with paid gameplay actions, points, NFTs, and cryptocurrency rewards.

According to YGG, LOL Land reached approximately 709,000 unique players and generated more than $8.2 million in cumulative revenue by the end of 2025. These results encouraged YGG Play to expand the model by signing publishing agreements with external studios and developing its own distribution platform for Casual Degen projects.

2. How the YGG Play Publishing Model Worked

YGG Play was positioned not as a standalone blockchain or a Layer 1 infrastructure developer, but as a Web3 game publisher. Its role was to connect game studios with the existing Yield Guild Games user network. The publisher supported go-to-market strategies, player acquisition, community management, LiveOps, marketing, and economic design.

An important part of the model was YGG's global guild infrastructure. Instead of relying exclusively on traditional advertising, the publisher could use regional communities, gaming leaders, content creators, and events to distribute new products. For Web3 games, this provided access to an audience that already owned crypto wallets and understood basic on-chain mechanics.

YGG Play's main areas of activity included:

  • user acquisition for new Web3 games;
  • go-to-market strategy and game launch support;
  • quests, rankings, tournaments, and LiveOps campaigns;
  • tokenomics and in-game monetization;
  • integration of games with YGG communities;
  • collaborations with gaming and NFT brands;
  • token launch support through the YGG Play Launchpad;
  • revenue-sharing models between publishers and developers.

YGG also experimented with smart contracts for revenue sharing. The idea was to make part of the financial relationship between developers and publishers transparent and verifiable on-chain. This approach differed from the traditional publishing model, where sales reporting and revenue distribution are generally managed through closed internal systems.

Blockchain did not replace the entire gaming backend. The Casual Degen model could combine server-side game logic, wallets, tokens, and selected on-chain operations. YGG Play should therefore be viewed primarily as publishing and distribution infrastructure for Web3 games rather than as an independent blockchain network.

3. Games, LOL Land, and the YGG Play Ecosystem

The first proprietary product of the publishing model was LOL Land. The game used familiar virtual board game mechanics and was designed for short gameplay sessions. It later introduced themed collaborations with other Web3 projects and IPs, including Pudgy Penguins and Gigaverse. This format allowed YGG Play to connect audiences from different crypto communities within a shared gaming environment.

Gigaverse, an on-chain RPG, became the first external publishing partner in July 2025. The partnership included cross-content integrations between Gigaverse and LOL Land. YGG Play later worked with Delabs Games on GIGACHADBAT, Proof of Play, and other projects. By the time the division's shutdown was announced, YGG reported that nine games had been signed.

Project Format Role in the YGG Play Ecosystem Status After Shutdown
LOL Land Casual Web3 board game First proprietary project and test of the Casual Degen model Shut down in July 2026
Waifu Sweeper Gacha + puzzle Second-party game developed by Raitomira Shut down in July 2026
GIGACHADBAT Casual baseball game Publishing collaboration with Delabs Games Continued under Delabs Games
Ragnarok Breaker Web3 game Participant in the platform and quest system Transferred to Planetarium Labs
Gigaverse On-chain RPG First external YGG Play publishing partner YGG Play support ended

Another project was Waifu Sweeper, developed by Raitomira. The game combined Minesweeper-style mechanics with a collectible anime character system and was positioned as a skill-oriented Casual Degen product. Together, these projects showed that YGG Play was not limited to a single genre. The main criteria were an accessible gameplay loop and compatibility with a crypto-native economy.

4. Launchpad, Tokens, and Web3 Infrastructure

In October 2025, YGG Play launched its own Launchpad. The platform combined a game catalog, quests, and token distribution mechanisms. Users could complete gaming tasks, earn YGG Play Points, and use them in activities connected to the ecosystem. This positioned the publisher as both a discovery channel for new projects and an additional layer connecting games with crypto-native users.

The first token launched through the platform was LOL, the in-game loyalty and reward token of LOL Land. The launch took place in November 2025 following a play-to-airdrop campaign. LOL was intended to play a role in the game's VIP system, where token staking could unlock additional gameplay features, higher limits, and other benefits within LOL Land.

The Launchpad continued to develop in early 2026. Boost mechanics were introduced, while the CHAD token associated with GIGACHADBAT was launched through the platform. According to YGG's first-quarter 2026 data, more than 1.6 million YGG was committed to the launch. Individual gaming tokens should not, however, be treated as equivalent to YGG itself: they served specific functions within individual products and had their own economic models.

YGG remained the core asset of the broader Yield Guild Games ecosystem and was used across different participation, reward, and staking mechanisms. Within YGG Play, the token was also used in reward programs and the Launchpad. The publishing system therefore connected three layers: individual games, their own gaming assets, and the broader YGG infrastructure.

One distinctive feature of this approach was its focus on existing Web3 users rather than attempting to completely hide cryptocurrency mechanics from players. This reduced the need to educate the audience about wallets, but it also made revenue more dependent on crypto market activity, token prices, and users' willingness to spend funds in on-chain applications.

5. YGG Play Shutdown in 2026 and Project Results

Despite its rapid growth, YGG Play operated as a standalone publishing division for only a little over a year. By mid-2026, YGG reported more than $9.6 million in cumulative ecosystem revenue. This included revenue generated by LOL Land, Waifu Sweeper, and GIGACHADBAT, demonstrating that there was an audience for the Casual Degen format.

On July 6, 2026, Yield Guild Games announced the shutdown of YGG Play. The company cited weak cryptocurrency market conditions, declining user activity, and challenging gaming industry economics among the reasons for the decision. Despite interest in individual projects, turning the model into a sustainable publishing business proved difficult.

During July, the division's infrastructure was gradually discontinued. Purchases and quests were stopped, and on July 31, the YGG Play website, Launchpad, LOL Land, and Waifu Sweeper ceased operations. Some partner projects continued independently: GIGACHADBAT moved under the management of Delabs Games, while Ragnarok Breaker transitioned to Planetarium Labs.

The YGG Play experience demonstrated one of the main risks of crypto-native game publishing. A successful individual game launch and high user activity do not necessarily guarantee the sustainability of the broader ecosystem. Demand for Casual Degen games depends on crypto market conditions, liquidity, audience interest, and the ability of projects to retain players after their initial launch.

Yield Guild Games itself continued operating after YGG Play was shut down, shifting part of its strategy toward the AI data economy and gaming behavioral data. YGG Play should therefore be viewed as a completed publishing experiment from 2025–2026. The project tested the Casual Degen format, a Web3 Launchpad, tokenized mechanics, and game distribution through crypto communities, while also demonstrating the economic limitations of this model.
