Ripple hack: $112 million in XRP tokens were stolen.

Jan 31, 2024

Ripple, the developer of the XRP cryptocurrency, was at the center of a large-scale cyberattack, as a result of which XRP tokens worth a total of $112 million were stolen. This information was disclosed by a blockchain analyst named ZachXBT in a post on a social network owned by Elon Musk.

According to the data provided, the attackers withdrew about 213 million XRP from the wallet with the address and redistributed them between various cryptocurrency exchanges, including MEXC, Gate, Binance, Kraken, OKX, HTX and HitBTC.

As a result of this incident, the price of XRP fell by 5%, reaching $ 0.485, but subsequently began to recover.

Ripple specializes in creating blockchain solutions for international payments and is known for its XRP cryptocurrency, which is one of the most popular and liquid on the market.

It should be noted that Ripple is in legal conflict with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC accuses the company of illegally selling XRP tokens as securities. In October, the district court rejected the SEC's motion to appeal the previous decision, according to which retail sales of the XRP token are not considered securities. However, the court found that Ripple violated securities laws by selling XRP tokens to institutional investors. The next court hearing is scheduled for April 23, 2024.

The Ripple hack has become the largest case of hacking in the world of cryptocurrencies since the beginning of 2024.

In December 2023, the decentralized OKX platform also fell victim to a hacker attack, as a result of which $430,000 in cryptocurrency was stolen. According to available information, the attack was caused by the compromise of the private key of one of the administrators of the DEX proxy server.

In November of the same year, the Monero foundation lost $450,000 due to the hacking of a crowdfunding wallet that was used to raise funds for various proposals and projects.
