An NFT Christmas tree was stolen from the artist Nikas Safronov

Dec 30, 2023

The NFT token in the form of a New Year tree, created by the Russian artist Nikas Safronov, was stolen, with a value of 3 million rubles. This digital asset, which includes a digitized image of the tree, a 3D model of the painting, and a New Year card with Safronov's autograph, was found on an external classified ads website where it was offered for 8 million rubles. In response to this, the artist's team initiated their own investigation without involving the police.

This NFT was created as part of a charitable project that involved 250 artists, each of whom decorated the tree with their unique ornament. The proceeds from the sale of this token were intended to support young talents. However, due to the lack of a suitable venue for showcasing the project, it was temporarily put on hold.

This incident is reminiscent of an event that occurred in January when Kevin Rose, the founder of the Moonbirds project, suffered the loss of dozens of NFTs worth over 1 million dollars due to a hack of his wallet. These cases underscore the growing risks associated with security in the realm of digital assets, especially in the context of NFTs, and highlight the need for stricter security measures to protect such valuable assets.
