Axie Infinity Co-founder Lost about $10 Million

Feb 26, 2024

Jeff Zirlin, one of the co-founders of the popular blockchain game Axie Infinity, lost approximately $10 million due to the hacking of two of his personal cryptocurrency wallets. Hackers managed to withdraw funds totaling 3248 ethers, which at the time of the transaction were valued at around $9.5 million. The stolen funds were transferred through the Ronin bridge, and then sent to a cryptocurrency mixer called Tornado Cash, complicating the tracking of the source of the funds.

Zirlin emphasized that despite significant personal losses, this incident has not affected the operational activities of Sky Mavis company and the functioning of the Ronin network, which is used in the Axie Infinity game to facilitate transactions and interactions within the gaming world. He also expressed hope that the community and developers will be able to develop strategies to protect against such attacks in the future, to safeguard users from losses based on his experience.

This incident served as a reminder to the entire crypto community about the importance of strengthening security measures and utilizing all available tools to protect personal data and assets. Hacks and thefts in the cryptocurrency sphere, unfortunately, are not uncommon, and each such case underscores the need for a more responsible approach to storing and handling crypto assets.
