The recent sale of 900 BTC by the German government on June 25 has garnered attention in the cryptocurrency market. This transaction sheds light on the government's Bitcoin wallet, which still holds a substantial amount of BTC valued at over $2.8 billion. The existence of such a large amount of Bitcoin in the government's possession raises concerns about potential selling pressure.
The current turbulence in the crypto market has led to a surge in transactions as investors and significant holders reorganize their assets amidst the market downturn. This uptick in activity has brought previously dormant wallets back to life and attracted the interest of major portfolio holders, including the German government.
German Government's Bitcoin Movements
The crypto wallet associated with the German government, known as “German Government (BKA),” has sparked excitement within the industry with a flurry of Bitcoin movements across various exchanges. On June 25, Arkham Intelligence, an on-chain intelligence provider, highlighted a transfer of 400 BTC from the wallet in two separate transactions to Coinbase and Kraken. The total value of this transaction, approximately $24.4 million, took place at 07:38 UTC. Subsequently, an additional 500 BTC, worth $30.5 million, was transferred to an undisclosed address.
UPDATE: German Government sells an additional $24M worth of BTC
These recent Bitcoin transfers are part of a series of movements by the German government, including a previous transfer of $130 million in BTC just six days earlier. On June 20, 2024, another $65 million in BTC was moved, followed by receipts of approximately $20.1 million from Kraken and a total of $5.5 million from wallets associated with Coinbase, Robinhood, and Bitstamp.
Despite the significant recent transactions, the German government-linked wallet still holds 46,359 BTC, valued at around $2.8 billion considering current prices. The frequent movement of assets has sparked speculations about a potential government sell-off, heightening concerns of further declines in Bitcoin’s price.
Bitcoin Price Trends
Bitcoin has been amidst a persistent downward trend over the past month, plunging to new price levels. Despite hitting a peak of $73,787 earlier in March, Bitcoin has struggled to sustain its upward trajectory. The cryptocurrency slipped below its $60k support threshold on June 24, 2024, falling to $59,812 before recovering.
The prolonged downturn has impacted BTC-related exchange-traded products, with U.S.-based issuers enduring consecutive six-day losses totaling approximately $584 million. Moreover, Bitcoin has witnessed substantial outflows in recent weeks totaling around $1.2 billion over a fortnight. Currently, Bitcoin is trading at $61,039, reflecting a 1% rise in the last 24 hours.
Nevertheless, the upcoming month of July may bring added selling pressure to the Bitcoin market. The troubled cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox has announced plans to start repaying its long-pending creditors, who are owed over $9.4 billion in Bitcoin. This imminent repayment process could have significant repercussions on the dynamics of the Bitcoin market.
Analyst Willy Woo, followed by more than 1.1 million individuals, indicated on June 22 that Bitcoin might undergo a cooling-off phase lasting one to four weeks. This prediction is based on technical chart patterns suggesting a probable correction before the stabilization of Bitcoin's price movements.
