At the NFT conference in Paris, the founder of The Sandbox, Sébastien Borget, expressed the opinion that Web3 games are losing player interest due to the use of token reward models without real utility. In a discussion with representatives from Animoca Brands, Sky Mavis, and Dapper Labs, Borget noted that many blockchain games have not been able to implement the utility of in-game tokens and NFTs quickly enough, leading to a loss of interest from players. He emphasized that only a few projects with real gameplay and utility have been able to withstand the bear market.
The founder of Sky Mavis (Axie Infinity), Alexander Larsen, expressed the view that the industry has moved too far away from the idea of in-game tokens towards the idea that games should simply be fun. He called for a return to the core idea of owning digital assets and economic incentives to attract new users. Larsen also highlighted the success of Axie Infinity as an example of an innovative approach in the industry, despite the need for further improvements.
The CEO of Dapper Labs (NBA Top Shot), Roham Gharegozlou, emphasized the potential of tokens to transfer ownership rights to digital experiences back to users. He expressed the expectation that developers will create games on the Flow blockchain and transfer ownership rights to the player community, and predicted that tokens could become part of an ecosystem existing above games.
The CEO of Animoca Brands, Robbie Young, speculated that an intermediate stage may arise before entering a compatible metaverse, where players will be able to transfer value between games using interchangeable tokens. This, he said, will facilitate some level of compatibility between different gaming worlds.
