The Glenlivet used AI and blockchain to sell exclusive whisky

Feb 14, 2024

The Scottish whisky producer The Glenlivet has unveiled a unique collection of 50-year-old whisky, utilizing generative AI to create unique label designs. As part of this initiative, each buyer will receive an NFT confirming ownership of the bottle, serving as a guarantee of the drink's authenticity and origin.

The company announced the sale of 12 bottles of single malt whisky produced in 1974, each adorned with a label symbolizing elements such as earth, fire, water, and others. Sales will be conducted through the specialized blockchain-based trading platform The Whiskey Exchange Cabinet, where buyers can purchase the rare drink for approximately $43,000 per bottle, starting from February 21.

Released to commemorate The Glenlivet's 200th anniversary, this collection not only showcases the company's vision for the future of luxury investments but also offers whisky enthusiasts a unique experience. Interestingly, in 2021, a bottle of 80-year-old The Glenlivet whisky was sold at auction for a record £150,000.

The use of blockchain technology in the alcohol industry is not new. Previously, in June 2022, the startup MetaBrewSociety announced the launch of the world's first brewery operated by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), and in February 2023, Nokia utilized the metaverse to share brewing expertise between factories in Germany and Australia, highlighting the growing role of digital technologies in traditional industries.
