Nifty League: Smashers 2.0 refers to an updated stage in the development of Nifty Smashers, the flagship multiplayer brawler from Nifty League. The game originally appeared in 2021 as part of an NFT ecosystem featuring DEGEN characters and the NFTL token, but the developers later significantly reworked the product and shifted toward a free-to-play model for mainstream players. The modern version of Nifty Smashers is distributed as a multiplayer platform fighter for PC and mobile devices, while its Web3 infrastructure primarily exists within the broader Nifty League ecosystem. Smashers 2.0 is therefore better viewed as an evolution of the original concept rather than a separate blockchain game or a new tokenized project.

1. Nifty League: Smashers 2.0 and the Evolution of the Web3 Project

Nifty League launched in September 2021 as a Web3 gaming platform focused on competitive games and community-driven governance. Its first game was Nifty Smashers, an arcade brawler with a retro-inspired visual style. The early concept linked game access to the DEGEN NFT collection and allowed participants to earn rewards in NFTL.

In March 2022, Nifty League raised $5 million in a seed round led by RSE Ventures. Other participants included Spartan Group, Lerer Hippeau, VaynerFund, Avocado Guild, EVOS Gaming, and several private investors. The funding was intended to support team expansion, development of the gaming platform, and a broader virtual ecosystem that later became known as NiftyWorld.

Over time, the strategy changed. Instead of a model where NFTs were a central requirement for accessing the game, Nifty Smashers evolved into a free-to-play multiplayer platform fighter. An Early Access version launched on Steam in February 2025, while a mobile version is available through the App Store. The project's Epic Games Store page also describes Nifty Smashers as a free-to-play title for Windows.

The name Smashers 2.0 is not presented in current official materials as a standalone game with its own token or blockchain. Instead, it reflects a major evolution of the original Nifty Smashers concept. This distinction is important: the modern game client and Nifty League's historical Web3 model belong to the same ecosystem, but not all of the original crypto mechanics are directly integrated into the current version of the game.

2. Nifty Smashers Gameplay, PvP and Progression System

Nifty Smashers is built around short multiplayer battles. Each match can feature between 4 and 16 players who compete to knock out or defeat opponents in the arena. The game combines elements of a platform fighter, party game, and arcade brawler, making movement, attacks, character selection, and the situation on the map important factors in each match.

Players can choose from six Tribes. Each group has its own special ability, creating differences between characters. As players progress, they gain access to weapons and bats, upgrade equipment, level up their characters, and distribute points across different attributes.

Main mechanics of the modern Nifty Smashers include:

  • online multiplayer battles;
  • matches for 4 to 16 players;
  • six Tribes with different special abilities;
  • unlockable weapons and other items;
  • weapon upgrades and leveling;
  • character progression and experience;
  • Stat Points distributed across different attributes;
  • cosmetic character customization;
  • different maps and party modes;
  • controller and multi-platform support.

Throughout 2025, the Early Access version continued to receive functional updates. These introduced new Inventory and Party interfaces, the Mars City map, a Tribe unlocking system, improvements to bot special abilities, and Custom Party Shuffle. This development illustrates the transition from an early NFT brawler toward a more conventional live-service model where regular gameplay updates play a central role.

Free-to-play access is another important part of the current model. In the Epic Games Store FAQ, the developer states that Nifty Smashers can be played without mandatory in-game purchases. As a result, users do not need to buy cryptocurrency or NFTs before accessing the core gameplay, which significantly distinguishes the modern version from Nifty League's original 2021 model.

3. DEGEN NFTs, In-Game Items and Digital Ownership

The DEGEN collection is historically at the center of Nifty League's Web3 component. These NFTs were issued on Ethereum and represented playable characters with different visual traits. Under the original model, owning a DEGEN provided access to Nifty Smashers and connected users with the DAO, tournaments, and other ecosystem features.

A broader system of digital items was also developed around DEGEN. Nifty League created Comics, in-game Items, and a dedicated marketplace, while its documentation continues to reference the corresponding NFT contracts and external trading platforms. The concept was designed to make Web3 assets more than collectible images by connecting them with a broader gaming platform.

Element Type Purpose Web3 Role
DEGEN NFT character Player identity and historical game access Digital ownership through NFTs
NFTL Utility / governance token Ecosystem operations and governance Nifty League ecosystem token
Items Digital items Gameplay and collectible functionality Support for NFT infrastructure
Comics NFT / collectible content Development of DEGEN lore and branding Tradable digital asset
NiftyWorld Land Planned virtual asset Space within NiftyWorld Part of the metaverse concept

However, the modern Nifty Smashers should be separated from its historical NFT model. The Epic Games Store FAQ explicitly states that the current version of Nifty Smashers does not contain integrated blockchain technology. At the time the FAQ was published, an in-game marketplace had not yet been launched either. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to describe every action or item in the modern game as an on-chain asset.

This approach reflects a broader shift in Web3 gaming strategy. Instead of requiring wallet interaction, Nifty League can use a conventional game as an entry point while keeping blockchain functionality for selected assets and ecosystem features. This lowers the technical barrier for players but also means that NFTs and the token should be evaluated separately from the core Smashers gameplay.

4. NFTL Token, Ethereum and Immutable zkEVM

NFTL is the utility and governance token of Nifty League. Historically, it was used for operations within the ecosystem, purchases of selected assets, and participation in governance mechanisms. The documentation also describes Nifty DAO, through which the project planned to gradually expand community influence over the development of the platform.

NFTL and the main Nifty League NFTs were initially closely connected to Ethereum. In 2022, the project also became one of the gaming initiatives using Immutable infrastructure to reduce the cost of blockchain transactions. Nifty League later announced the migration of part of its Web3 ecosystem to Immutable zkEVM.

Current documentation lists NFTL trading pairs on Ethereum through Uniswap and on Immutable zkEVM through QuickSwap. NFTL therefore exists separately from the Smashers game client itself. The presence of a token on a blockchain does not mean that every PvP battle or in-game action is recorded on-chain.

NFTL market indicators require careful interpretation. By 2026, external services show the token trading significantly below its historical 2022 peak, while liquidity in individual pools remains limited. Low trading volume means that the quoted market price can change considerably even with relatively small transactions.

Users should also distinguish between NFTL on Ethereum and its version on Immutable zkEVM. Before making transactions, it is important to verify the network and current contract address using official documentation. Migrations are a common part of Web3 infrastructure, but they can create risks when users interact with outdated contracts or unsupported assets.

5. Nifty Smashers Status and the Future of the Nifty League Ecosystem

Nifty Smashers remains the main gaming product of Nifty League. The Steam version entered Early Access on February 7, 2025, the mobile client is available through the App Store, and a Windows version is listed on the Epic Games Store. Early Access status means that gameplay mechanics and functionality may continue to change during development.

Nifty League positions itself not only as the developer of Smashers but also as a gaming studio and publishing platform. Its ecosystem also includes Nifty Royale and the WEN Game and Crypto Winter mini-games, while NiftyWorld remains a planned virtual environment listed as coming soon.

In 2025, Smashers received updates featuring new maps, party mechanics, and interface changes. At the same time, Nifty League's public GitHub repositories show limited recent activity, with some older repositories archived. This does not necessarily reflect the status of the closed-source game client, but it remains relevant when evaluating the development of the project's Web3 infrastructure.

A key question is the connection between the game and its crypto ecosystem. Smashers can develop as a standalone free-to-play brawler, while the value of DEGEN NFTs and NFTL depends on their practical utility, liquidity, and the continued implementation of Web3 features.

Nifty League: Smashers 2.0 can therefore be viewed as a transition from an early NFT brawler to a more accessible multiplayer game with a separate Web3 layer. The core gameplay does not require blockchain technology, while DEGEN, NFTL, and Immutable zkEVM maintain Nifty League's connection to the crypto economy. The future role of Web3 will depend on how these assets are integrated with features that players actually use.
